For most of my twenties my attitude toward book and music reviews, and criticism in general, was that I was better off finding things on my own. As far as books are concerned I'm fairly happy with the result: a pretty broad sampling of the classics, a number of interesting digressions, and a lot of science fiction. The result is that I enjoy reading Thomas Mann as much as I do Raymond Chandler
