Friends, I hope someday you too will have the joy of trusting in the goodness and love of God. Love is not a question of understanding, but of faith. Love, in turn, as Aquinas said, is a greater understanding than knowledge: amor est magis cognitivus quam cognitio. Neither faith nor love discards knowledge, but it is only in the light of faith that knowledge can be of any value. I’m going to become a Catholic: both my growing understanding of theology and my awareness of God’s own purposes in my life point in that direction. Alas, I’m unlikely to get any support, either from my scientifically minded friends, nor from my Protestant relatives. Nor is it going to be easy to assuage my own doubts. There’s a lot of things I don’t like about the Roman Catholic Church, from its hierarchical organization to some of its positions. But this is all about trust, which is at once a very easy and a very difficult task.
Now if only I could run The Colossus on faith alone.
