From an Atlantic article about the vice presidency:
Aedanus Burke of South Carolina in 1791 consulted a
gentleman skilled in the doctrine of chances and was
told that such a contingency would happen only once in
840 years.
Somehow, “gentleman skilled in the doctrine of chances” has a certain ring that “scientist” doesn’t. I’m also a big fan of “geometer”.
