While walking to a friend’s house on my way to a party I was mugged. Odd things:

  1. I didn’t immediately figure out that they wanted money. I thought they were just hitting me for the fun of it.
  2. Aside from the inconvenience of losing my wallet I almost wouldn’t mind having it happen again. I can’t immediately think of anything I could have done that would have resulted in a better conclusion: if I had put up an effective defense they might have pulled a gun. (On the other hand they probably would have pulled the gun if they had it). What I mean is that I’ve never been in a fight before and if it had been on even terms it might have been entertaining.
  3. Cops have a shitty job. I realized this while making a statement. I could have typed the thing in about 5 minutes, but the officer taking the statement had to write it, and had to write it in such a way that an uneducated jury could understand it. So much paperwork and bullshit, and then the added danger of getting shot by some asshole robbing a liquor store. I’ve dealt with a few stupid, mean cops in my lifetime, but so far I have only sympathy for the Berkeley police dept.
